THE LION AND THE SUN

A NOVEL BY J. ASGAR

The excitement of modernization of Iran in the 20th century is captured

in this novel through the life of Salman's family starting from his escape

from the Bolsheviks in Azerbaijan to Iran and building the first Iranian

Railroad under powerful Reza Shah.

As a first Iranian industrialist Salman was able to create a European life

style in Tehran and educate his six sons at the University of Michigan,

the Sorbonne and the University of Tehran.  His oldest daughter became

the first women Dentist in Tehran.  WWII put a stop to this unusual

secular modernization movement in Iran.

The Allies exiled Reza Shah and made his weak and corrupt son as the

Shah in order to be able to manipulate him anyway they wanted.

Through unusual political events Dr. Mossadegh became the Prime

Minister of Iran and introduced democratic elements in the

government.  President Eisenhower became scared of having a

democratic country bordering USSR.  He sent his CIA director to

topple Dr. Mossadegh and bring back the Shah who had escaped

to Italy.  That ended any democratic movement in the Middle East.

Falal, Salman's youngest son, in conflict with his father's wishes,

wanted to become a concert pianist.  He came to America

to study music, but unfortunately he found out that he could not pursue

his musical career and that he had a more important duty-to continue

his father's search for freedom for his family.
